About Honua Films - Who We Are

About Honua Films

Honua Films is a non-profit organization dedicated to telling powerful stories of people around the world to support awareness and education with an effort to mobilize a campaign for change.  Founded in 2011 by filmmaker, Michelle Addington, Honua Films is headquartered in Maui, Hawaii.  Michelle’s first documentary, Humpbacks from Fire to Icean intimate film portrait of the first year of a baby Humpback Whale’s life, has been distributed by National Geographic worldwide as well as in the United States where it aired as Fellowship of Whales on PBS Nature.  This powerful film was a finalist for the Best in Broadcast Award at the Blue Ocean Film Festival.

Honua Films, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) established on the Island of Oahu in January 2011 to inspire positive social change through compelling visual stories that engage, entertain and educate – films that achieve a return on impact.  Honua Films provides the opportunity for people of all ages with various backgrounds and interests to be informed on subjects of social, cultural, and humanitarian concern and in return the public will benefit through social change, educational outcome or humanitarian concern. It is our goal to shape the view of the world by being the voice for those who cannot be heard and awaken those who want to make a change.

Check out Honua Film’s first documentary, Pure Medicine:  Beyond The Mission. It is a glorious and graphic collection of stories devoted to the Non Government Organizations (NGO’s) and the illuminating realities of Ecuador’s impoverished health care system.

Pure Medicine:  Beyond The Mission is a documentary that goes beyond the surgery room, and tells the story of healing and humanity through emotional interviews. Where vaccines, nutrition or the money to seek health care are unavailable, the vision of the grass roots team succeeds year after year throughout Ecuador.

Our Mission

Inspiring positive social change through compelling, visual stories that engage, entertain, and educate.

Honua Films’ passion is creating untold stories through artful media with an educational outcome for humanitarian concerns.

We believe it is particularly urgent to tell these stories so viewers will have the opportunity to make better, informed decisions about sustainability of nature and place with a universal appeal of our themes. By acknowledging our relationship between the environment and culture, we have the chance to gain invaluable insight into the dynamics of a sustainable community. Our stories will inspire you to be the catalyst for change and find the humanitarian within as we create films as a matter of conscience and action. We bring viewers engaging images and thoughtful stories that allow a connection and build an ethic from that connection.

Honua Films was created to achieve a return on impact not a return on investment by using the medium of film to educate and make a difference. Created to achieve a literary mission about our natural world that in return will benefit the public through social change, educational outcome or humanitarian concern. It is our goal to shape the view of the world around us by descriptively telling the stories of “place,” how others have been historically shaped by the environment and culture.

If you are interested in the art of film making and would like to learn about our internship programs, have an “idea” in mind, or would like to give a voice to those who might otherwise have none, please share it with us.
